Common Causes

Why cargo sits

Each of these has a different response and a different timeline. Identifying which one you are facing is the first job.

CBP query A request for documents, or a challenge to classification or declared value. Document review.
CBP exam The shipment is selected for physical or non-intrusive examination. Exam coordination.
Bond issue The bond is insufficient for the shipment value or has been saturated. Customs bonds.
Agency hold FDA or another agency has placed the entry under review. Hold assistance.
Detention A formal notice has issued and a response is required within a set period. Detention coordination.
Document mismatch The invoice, packing list and transport documents disagree with each other. Document review.

CBP and FDA hold sole authority over entry, examination, sampling, detention, refusal and admissibility decisions, and laboratory and review periods are set by the government. Third-party storage, demurrage and examination charges may apply regardless of outcome. Formal legal appeals may require qualified legal counsel.
